What is Fascia?

Fascia is an incredibly important connective tissue that surrounds and connects every part of our body, from head to toe and from skin to internal organs. This continuous, integrated system surrounds muscles, nerves, blood vessels, internal organs and other body structures, acting as a support and interconnection between all parts of our body. When the body faces significant events such as surgery, fractures, bruises, orthopaedic trauma, prolonged immobilisation (e.g. a cast), internal organ problems, stress, poor nutrition or hormonal changes, adhesions can form in the fascial tissue. These adhesions can compromise the normal functioning of the fascia, causing a number of complaints: Muscle pain and weakness, Reduced range of motion and stiffness, heaviness and lack of energy, Difficulty with coordination and balance, Problems with internal organs, such as digestive difficulties, thyroid problems, abdominal bloating, respiratory difficulties (asthma, coughing, chest constriction), and kidney or visceral disorders.
